Can a roof be repaired in the rain or in winter?
A lasting roof repair needs a dry roof, and most materials also need weather above freezing, because sealants, coatings, and shingle strips won't bond to a wet or frozen surface. Winter repairs happen on dry, milder days. In the rain, you catch the drip inside, and sometimes, when it's safe, we cover the spot.
If you want me to take a look, text a picture to 443-900-4815 or call the same number. I'm James. I've worked on roofs around Baltimore City and Baltimore County for 24+ years, and I'm licensed and insured, MHIC #154344.
What can be done in bad weather, and what has to wait?
- In the rain: a wet roof is slippery and dangerous, and nothing sticks to it properly. The real repair waits for it to dry. Sometimes, when it's safe, we can put a temporary cover on to keep water out in the meantime.
- Right after the rain: a good time to look. The stain inside is fresh, and the roof can be checked as soon as it's dry enough to work on.
- In winter: repairs go on through the winter on dry days. Ice and snow on the roof have to be gone first, and some work waits for a milder day.
- Coatings: silver coats and other roof coatings need dry, warm weather to cure, so those are spring through fall work. See silver coating a flat roof.
What about shingles in the cold?
Cold shingles get stiff and can crack when they're bent or nailed. The sealant strip on each shingle also needs warm sun to stick it to the one below. Shingles put down in the cold can seal later once the weather warms up, and sometimes on repairs we hand seal them with roofing cement so the wind doesn't lift them before then. See shingle replacement.
What should I do until it's dry?
- Catch the water with a bucket or a towel, and move anything valuable out of the way.
- Take pictures of the stain and the drip, and note which way the wind was blowing.
- Stay off the roof. A wet or icy roof is no place for anyone without the right gear.
- Text me a picture. If water is coming in, say so in your text so I know it's urgent.

What we do
- Look at the roof as soon as it's safe, from the outside. On a steep or icy roof I can use the drone. I'm an FAA-licensed drone pilot.
- Find where the water is getting in.
- Send you pictures of what we found, with a price before any work starts.
- Make the repair on a dry day, with materials suited to the temperature.
See roof repair for the kinds of roofs we work on, and the seasonal roof checklist for what to check before winter.

Rain and winter roof repair questions
Do roofers work in the rain?
Not on a real repair. A wet roof is slippery, and sealants and shingles won't bond to it. The repair waits for a dry day, and in the meantime the goal is to keep water out.
Can shingles be put on in winter?
Yes, on dry days. Cold shingles are stiff, so they're handled carefully, and sometimes on repairs we hand seal them so the wind doesn't lift them before warm weather seals them on their own.
Is a tarp a fix?
No. A tarp is a short-term cover to keep water out until the roof can be repaired. Left up too long, it can blow loose, hold water, and damage the shingles under it.
How soon after the rain can a roof be fixed?
As soon as the roof is dry and safe to work on. A sunny, breezy day dries a roof fast. A cold, damp stretch can take longer.
Can a flat roof be repaired in winter?
Many flat roof repairs can be done on dry winter days. Coatings like a silver coat wait for warmer weather, because they need warmth to cure.
